Over the last two and a half decades, India’s gold reserves have undergone a remarkable transformation – from just 357 tonnes in 2000 to 881 tonnes in 2026.
According to the latest RBI Weekly Statistical Supplement (as of 26 June 2026), the country’s official gold reserves remain steady at around 881 tonnes, reflecting continuity in India’s long-term reserve strategy despite global market volatility.
This steady accumulation reflects not just financial strategy but also the economic confidence of successive governments.

Analysis & Insights
- From 2000 to 2008, India’s gold reserves remained flat at around 357 tonnes.
- In 2009, under the Congress-led UPA, India made a significant jump by acquiring 200 tonnes from the IMF – a strategic move during the global financial crisis.
- Post 2014, the BJP-led government continued increasing reserves, reaching over 881 tonnes by 2026, reflecting a strong focus on macroeconomic security, currency hedging, and reserve diversification.
